Franz Tunder (1614-67)

Franz Tunder was a North German composer and organist. Around the time when he succeeded Hasse as organist at St. Mary’s Church in Lübeck, the repertoire of the church drastically shifted towards pieces in the newer Italian concertato style, with obbligato instrumental parts, such as that of the Venetian composers. Thus, in Lübeck it was Tunder who started a tradition of dependence on Italian models for both the music to be purchased and that to be composed. Upon Tunder’s death, he was succeeded by Dietrich Buxtehude as organist.
