Guest Artists for 1999-2000 Season

John DornenburgJohn Dornenburg has performed as soloist across Great Britain, New Zealand, Australia, and the U.S.A. His recordings for the Centaur, Meridian, Koch, Music and Arts, and MHS labels include solo works by J.S. Bach, Marais, Telemann, and Handel. Most recently he has recorded Suites from Marais' Piéces de Violes Livre III with harpsichordist Malcolm Proud and gambist Lynn Tetenbaum. He was awarded the Soloist’s Diploma in viola da gamba from the Royal Conservatory in The Hague for his studies with Wieland Kuijken, and he also studied performance practice with Nikolaus Harnoncourt at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. Mr. Dornenburg teaches the viola da gamba on the faculty at Stanford University, and lectures in music history at California State University, Sacramento. He is founder of the baroque ensemble Music’s Re-creation and the Sex Chordæ Consort of Viols, and has also appeared with the San Francisco Symphony, American Bach Soloists, Magnificat, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, Tafelmusik, Aston Magna, Chatham Baroque, and the Carmel Bach Festival, among others.


Mary SpringfelsMary Springfels has been musician-in-residence at the Newberry Library since 1982, and has served as director of the Newberry Consort since its founding in 1986. Ms. Springfels has played with many American and European ensembles, including the New York Pro Musica, the Waverly and Folger Consorts, Concert Royal, Pomerium Musices, Sqeuentia, Parthenia, and Orpheus Band; she was a founding member of the Elizabethan Enterprise and Les Filles de Sainte-Colombe. Ms. Springfels is on the faculty at Northwestern University and has taught at Duke University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the University of Chicago. She also is an active teacher in early music workshops across the United States. Ms. Springfels has recorded for Titanic, Nonesuch, Columbia, Decca, and Harmonia Mundi.
