"I call them, concert voices or better, Concentus (a small singing ensemble, Latin), since they respond to each other, striving to outdo one another. They must not only be letter-perfect and reliable, but also have a good disposition."
—Michael Prætorius, Syntagma Musicum lll, 1619
Formed in 1991 to offer both San Francisco Bach Choir singers and audiences a format for the investigation of choral literature written for the small ensemble, Concentus has evolved from a 12 member a cappella group to a 24 voice ensemble, performing a broad range of literature, but specializing in chamber music of the north German baroque. Drawn from the membership of the main choir, Concentus singers commit extra time to preparing chamber concerts, which, like those of the main choir, stress the historical and cultural context of the music by using period performance practices appropriate to the era from which the works are drawn.
