In the seventeenth century, virtuosic music for cornetts spread rapidly from northern Italy to Germany as composers eagerly exploited the facility of these high wind instruments, writing florid passage work and dazzling cascades of notes. Our Christmas concert showcases this magnificent music for antiphonal choirs and instruments and features cornettists Stephen Escher and guest artist Doron Sherwin. From the pyrotechnics of Monteverdi’s Sonata sopra Sancta Maria and the polychoral splendor of Michael Prætorius’ Wachet auf, to our traditional candlelight carols from the North German baroque, this program is the perfect beginning to your holiday season.
